My friend was pregnant for five and a half months. The doctor told her that it was her last chance to terminate the pregnancy. If she waited another week, he would no longer be able to help her. My friend thought that she did not have a choice. She knew that she could not have this baby. I decided to stay with her the whole time. The procedure started with the medicine three days in advance, so that her cervix would be dilated and ready. She received the local anesthesia, so that she would not feel the pain.
The doctor turned Susan’s fetus into the “breech” position (feet first) and pulled the fetus from the uterus until all, but his head was delivered. The fetus’s body was moving. His little fingers were clasping together. He was kicking his feet. Then the doctor forced the scissors into the base of the skull and inserted the catheter. The arms jerked out in a flinch, a startle reaction the baby does when he thinks he might fall. The doctor opened the scissors up and stuck the high-power suction tube into the hole to suck the brain out. Now the fetus was completely limp.
Forced late abortions are considered an acceptable way of enforcing China’s population limits. Desperate times call for desperate measures, yet something is entirely wrong. Each year, millions of mothers in China are forced to undergo abortions or sterilizations under the One-Child Policy. Life is precious. It should, at least, become an option.
